Franklin D. Roosevelt Scholarship
Motion to Establish the Franklin D. Roosevelt Scholarship
18 February 2008
We, the members of the Executive Council of Model United Nations at the University of California San Diego, do hereby call for a motion to establish a financial need-based scholarship called the “Franklin D. Roosevelt Scholarship” named after the 32nd United States President who introduced the phrase “United Nations” in 1942.
The Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations has determined that one of the founding principles of the United Nations is:
to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small
To that end, we recognize that the students in Model United Nations at UCSD should be afforded the opportunity to participate in Model United Nations conferences regardless of economic background.
- This scholarship will apply to the monetary amount required of a scholarship recipient to participate in a conference as a member of a delegation sponsored by this organization.
- This scholarship will afford a decrease in the amount required of the scholarship recipient up to and including one-half of the total costs charged to our delegates who do not receive the scholarship.
- The exact amount afforded by the scholarship will be determined by consensual discussion and a vote between members of the Executive Council of this organization.
- If no simple majority of the Executive Council can be reached, then no scholarship money shall be allotted.
- The scholarship candidate is encouraged, but not required, to submit documentation or evidence that indicates financial need.
- The Executive Council reserves the right to award as much or as little funding based on the individual discretion of the members of the Executive Council.
- Members of the Executive Council and of this organization must keep the identity of scholarship candidates and scholarship recipients in the strictest of confidences.
- In the event that a member of the Executive Council fails to do so, a motion of no confidence shall be called, for the elected position of that member.
- Members of the Executive Council and of this organization are encouraged to make the opportunity afforded by this scholarship and the amount provided by this scholarship public in the interest of openness and fairness.
We do these things openly, without reservation, and of our own accord on this day, the eighteenth day of February in the year two thousand and eight.
